Emergency Preparedness Poster: Winter Storm Survival Guide
Our Emergency Preparedness Poster: Winter Storm Survival Guide focuses on three major actions that are vital for all employees to follow when a winter storm is likely to hit.
Seek Shelter and Prepare for Extreme Cold
Winter storms can range from a normal snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Many winter storms bring dangerously low temperatures and, sometimes, strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.
One of the major concerns with winter weather is that it can knock out heat, power and communication, sometimes for days at a time. Heavy snowfall and extreme cold can have serious effects on an entire region. Icy roadways can cause serious accidents, and sometimes people die from being in really cold temperatures for too long.
- According to the National Weather Service, last year, more than 500 people were killed in weather-related events in the U.S. and an additional 1,200 people were injured.
- There were 18,807 severe storms, which includes weather that produces tornadoes, wind and/or hail.
Natural disasters, including severe weather events, occur more frequently than most people realize. The key to survival — whether on or off the job — is being prepared.
