Essential Steps Toward Fall Prevention

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that fatal work injuries from falls have increased 25 percent since 2011. Take the following actions to reduce falls in your facility:

  • Review accident reports to see how many slips, trips and falls have occurred in your facility during the past month and/or year.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify environmental and equipment hazards that could cause slips, trips and falls in your workplace.
  • Maintain good housekeeping throughout the workplace.
  • Provide fall protection to employees who are working from heights.
  • Ensure all stairways and floor openings are properly guarded.
  • Provide safety training on the prevention of slips, trips and falls for all employees.
  • Make sure workers wear the proper footwear for their work environment.
  • All slips, trips and falls, with or without injury, should be reported, recorded and thoroughly investigated.
